A representação semântica da ação refere-se tanto à organização na memória dos conhecimentos sobre as acções como ao seu tratamento. A semântica da ação diz respeito a representações de natureza sensório-motora ligadas à execução e expressas por verbos e gestos. Qualquer representação do léxico que exprima acções (verbos, expressões verbais, nominalização) constitui um conhecimento explícito sobre objectos funcionais. Este ponto de vista está de acordo com as perspectivas dos linguistas que demonstram a presença de primitivos cognitivos (Jackendoif, 1983, Desclés, 1985). O significado de um signo num discurso é uma representação na qual se combina o valor semântico na linguagem; esta representação é construída pelas relações cognitivas do cérebro com referência aos objectos que nos rodeiam. Pedir a uma pessoa que realize a ação de fechar uma porta aberta é expresso pela seguinte afirmação: 'fecha a porta', e mais frequentemente na linguagem coloquial por 'a porta', mas raramente por 'fecha'. Deste ponto de vista, interessa-nos o verbo de ação na afasia.
