A tradução é a arte de reproduzir um enunciado ou uma parte do discurso da língua de partida (LE) para a língua de chegada (LT). Uma parte do discurso pode ser constituída por um parágrafo, uma frase, uma sentença e um neologismo. Newmark (1988) afirma que os neologismos podem ser definidos como unidades lexicais recentemente cunhadas ou unidades lexicais existentes que adquirem um novo sentido. O caso deste estudo é o subtítulo do filme Avatar (2009), cujas 92 palavras novas em língua inglesa (SL) e as suas contrapartes em língua persa (TL) foram extraídas, registadas e analisadas com base nas estratégias sugeridas pelo modelo de Silvia (2001) para a criação de neologismos e no quadro teórico de Newmark (1988) para a tradução de neologismos. Neste estudo qualitativo e descritivo, assistiu-se ao filme Avatar e os dados foram sondados e analisados no conteúdo do texto através das legendas.
