Wohl nur, wenn man zu ihrem Ursprung zurückkehrt, sie von allem Dazugekommenen säubert, um zu sehen was Religion ist und warum sie entstanden ist. Im diesem Essay soll nun versucht werden, deutlich zu machen, woran man nach Durkheim Religion erkennt und es sollen aktuelle Phänomene aufgeführt werden, auf die diese Definition zutrifft. Es soll also untersucht werden, inwieweit Durkheims Definition von Religion auf die heutige Gesellschaft anwendbar ist. Hierfür wird sie einer weiteren Definition, der von Thomas Luckmann, gegenübergestellt.Zuletzt wird untersucht, inwieweit diese Religionsdefinitionen auf die heutige Welt übertragbar sind.Dabei soll der Aspekt der Ganzheitlichkeit, welcher für moderne Religionsformen zentral ist, ins Zentrum der Untersuchung gestellt werden.
