Los cuentos de Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) manifiestan la enorme versatilidad del autor en cuanto a los temas y los procedimientos técnicos, e inciden en los temas capitales de su obra: el fingimiento, la habilidad para desdoblarse, las argumentaciones más inteligentes y agudas, la espiritualidad, y la tendencia del hombre al universo del mal y la perversión. Pocas obras literarias despiertan tanto interés en los lectores como la de Fernando Pessoa, algo que es inversamente proporcional al que suscita su propia vida. La fascinación por el personaje tiene que ver con la calidad indiscutible de su narrativa y su poesía, pero también con el hecho de que constantemente, desde su fallecimiento, se publican inéditos y, sobre todo, con las aparentes paradojas que se establecen en la conjunción de contrarios irreconciliables: Pessoa es un conservador monárquico y, a la vez, un posmoderno, adelantado a su tiempo; es Fernando Pessoa pero también sus heterónimos, cada uno con sus peculiaridades; es un hombre absorto en sus cavilaciones filosóficas y sus historias literarias, y a la vez un creador de slogans que se colocan en la vanguardia de la historia del marketing comercial; defiende las dictaduras militares como paso previo a la consecución del imperio monárquico y a la vez critica duramente a Salazar por sus actitudes tiránicas; es capaz de escribir una oración íntima y sentida de entrega a la voluntad de Dios, y a la vez de publicar un panfleto furibundo contra el catolicismo tradicional.
