Este livro examina a natureza, a génese e a perpetuação do mito do Primeiro Grande Debate nas Relações Internacionais. Primeiro, é analisada a conceção popular do mito e o recente revisionismo historiográfico que destaca a sua imprecisão. Em seguida, é analisada a função do mito em termos contemporâneos e históricos. Por fim, é apresentada uma avaliação do impacto negativo da perpetuação do mito na disciplina. Este livro argumenta que só através de pesquisas futuras destinadas a compreender plenamente os locais de formação da identidade disciplinar e através de um compromisso disciplinar mais amplo com o aprimoramento da historiografia é que o mito poderá ser expurgado da consciência disciplinar e os seus efeitos negativos revertidos.
