Trabalhar a terra ajuda psicologicamente, restaura a auto-confiança, ensina a paciência, cria um sentimento de utilidade e ajuda a construir uma nova identidade positiva. O autor propõe um plano concreto para os dois anos seguintes à libertação da prisão: 50% do dinheiro é utilizado para apoiar as pessoas (psicólogo, assistência social, formação), 25% para lhes dar os meios de arranque (terra, ferramentas, sementes, dinheiro para a primeira instalação) e 25% para as ajudar a progredir (formação avançada, adesão a cooperativas agrícolas). O livro propõe ainda uma lei internacional que crie um Programa Mundial com um fundo de financiamento, formação reconhecida e salários justos. Para ter êxito, a participação deve ser voluntária, a formação deve ser séria, o apoio deve ser a longo prazo, os ex-reclusos devem ter acesso à terra e a sociedade deve deixar de os rejeitar.
