O objetivo desta investigação é analisar as principais áreas de reforma que a NATO abraçou nos últimos anos, a fim de avaliar a sua posição atual na arquitetura de segurança europeia e as suas perspectivas para o futuro. Quase de um dia para o outro, a agenda da NATO mudou drasticamente, incluindo os seus planos formulados na Cimeira de Gales em 2014. A NATO precisava de se concentrar na defesa colectiva e de encontrar uma resposta para a forma de reagir à agressão da Rússia e ao modelo de guerra híbrida. A preparação tradicional da NATO para a defesa colectiva e os seus compromissos ao abrigo do artigo 5.º enfrentam atualmente um desafio significativo com a abordagem russa ao conflito, que combina muitos elementos bem conhecidos com conceitos e capacidades modernos numa abordagem holística, multidimensional e flexível que visa os pontos fracos da Aliança.
