History and reality, texts and memory-all are laden with distortion. How, then, can we discern the true essence of things?历史与现实，文本与记忆，无不带有偏见，如何洞察本相？Reflective Historiography and Historiographical Reflection is a new work by the renowned historical anthropologist Wang Ming-ke. It serves as the epistemological foundation for his seminal books such as The Chinese Periphery, The Qiang between Han and Tibetan, Heroic Ancestors and Fraternal Peoples, and The Nomadic Alternative. Through key conceptual tools-human ecology, reality/representation, identity/memory, text/context-the author proposes an analytical method to uncover the underlying reality of society from its representations (whether in texts, images, films, or social events). This approach integrates multiple social science disciplines into historical study, forming what Wang terms 'reflective historiography.' It also embodies his critical reflection, as a historian, on the discipline of history itself.
