Le nitrate est l’un des composés les plus fréquemment trouvés dans les cours d’eau en raison de l’infinité et de la diversité des sources existantes, qu’elles soient naturelles ou artificielles. Son excès peut entraîner divers problèmes sanitaires et environnementaux, mais les moyens peu coûteux et efficaces de traiter l’eau contaminée par les nitrates ne sont pas encore une réalité. L’un des moyens d’assainir les aquifères ou les sources d’eau contaminés par les nitrates ou les nitrites, qui peut s’avérer peu coûteux et efficace, est l’utilisation de la photocatalyse, qui utilise les rayons ultraviolets (UV) ou visibles comme source d’énergie pour la dégradation des nitrates et des nitrites. En se concentrant sur cette forme de traitement, de nouveaux photocatalyseurs ont été synthétisés pour la réduction des espèces azotées telles que les nitrates et les nitrites en azote moléculaire.
