What do you do when the end of the world is a downward spiral, not a spontaneous combustion? What do you do if you were told that humanity has an expiration date? The story begins with the discovery of a preserved stegosaurus in ice, which has preserved most of its DNA integrity. The US government keeps this under wraps and secretly and privately hires scientists from all over the world to a highly classified location. As the story develops, one scientist, Luis Hernandez, discovers an anomaly within the internal scans of the dinosaur, which are being performed before completely freeing it from the preserving ice. The technology provides penetrative imaging without probing or physically exposing the fossil. Through the images, he notices that the dinosaur is female and contains an embryo inside, but that the reproductive system shows signs of deterioration, which is more accelerated than any other part of the body. He shows great concern and tries to figure out what might have caused the difference in the rate of deterioration. As this is occurring, the facility has set a date to completely expose the dinosaur in a controlled environment and perform an autopsy to take preserved tissue in the hopes of pioneering a scientific breakthrough. Luis discovers that the dinosaur’s reproductive system was attacked by an aerial virus, destroying all the reproductive systems of living beings on Earth during prehistory. Luis knew that if the virus were released, it would become active again and would attack and destroy all the reproductive systems of living beings on Earth, whose immune systems are much weaker than that of dinosaurs. Luis tries to stop the autopsy but fails to do so. A dormant virus inside the dinosaur reacts to the newly exposed atmosphere and becomes active. This released virus begins to spread across the earth, traveling through cold air currents, destroying the reproductive system of all living things, including humans. This virus causes the fetuses of pregnant women to die inside the womb. Now, humanity is on the verge of extinction with stillbirths and the destruction of the reproductive systems of all living mammals. Red Iris is unique for its kind because it does fall under the end-of-the-world category, but does not portray fiery explosions, supernatural assailants, or violent natural disasters; it explores a fossilized virus that enters the modern world and brings down the birth rate from 198 newborns per minute to zero. It is tangible and realistic, which makes it devastating and unnerving. Red Iris is a science fiction film that focuses on the dramatic domino effect that an embryo-killing virus from the stomach of a stegosaurus would cause. Luis embarks on a mission to bring the existence of this virus to light while the U.S. government tries to stop it. The story involves every country in the world realizing that humans are on the verge of extinction. It is a vision of society realizing that the last hope for the survival of humans is children. The drug is no longer the first illegal business in the world; now it is the abduction of children to be sold to companies and empires that pay billions of dollars for children that allowing them the continuity of their legacy so that it does not disappear. The story shows different sectors of society changing and their behavior in the face of an event of this magnitude.
