She describes her transformation from a self-hating and hiding fat child into a proud fat woman who joined the fat liberation and size acceptance movements and performed for 18 years with a feminist theater collective she helped to found. In 1982 she came out as a lesbian into the welcoming environment of the San Francisco Bay Area—all this while running her own business, Bock’s Bed and Breakfast, for over 23 years in her family’s historic home on Willard Street.
