In recent years, image processing has evolved from an offline, computer-centric task into a crucial real-time function embedded within intelligent systems. Applications such as autonomous navigation, medical imaging, industrial inspection, and agricultural automation now rely on compact computing platforms capable of instant visual analysis. This close integration of image processing with embedded system design has transformed how machines interpret and react to their environments.Real-time image processing demands a fine balance among speed, accuracy, and reliability within strict hardware constraints. Unlike traditional desktop systems, embedded devices must handle heavy visual workloads with limited computational resources, low power, and minimal memory. Therefore, engineers and researchers must design both hardware and algorithms that function efficiently under these limitations. This introductory chapter presents the foundation of real-time image processing for embedded platforms, tracing its evolution and explaining the motivation for developing resource-efficient vision systems.
