Cette étude s’est concentrée sur les anciens habitants du village de Canela, situé sur la rive droite du fleuve Tocantins, à Palmas-TO. Avec la création du réservoir de la centrale hydroélectrique de Lajeado en 2001, cette communauté a été réinstallée dans la zone urbaine de Palmas, plus précisément dans le quartier 508 nord. Cette thèse est un effort visant à comprendre la dynamique récente de construction et de reconstruction du quotidien et du mode de vie des communautés traditionnelles, à travers l’étude du déplacement d’un village, le village de Canela, à l’origine riverain. Ce village, réinstallé dans un nouveau contexte urbain - la ville de Palmas -, réinvente, reconstruit et lutte pour la préservation des caractéristiques qui garantissent son identité communautaire. Un mode de vie construit au cours d’un siècle et demi et qui identifiait ce village comme une communauté riveraine est brusquement interrompu par la formation du réservoir de la centrale hydroélectrique, inondant les terres où vivait cette population. Ce fait a conduit à une série de revendications de la part de cette communauté, tant en ce qui concerne ses conditions matérielles d’existence que ce qu’elle considère comme la restructuration de son mode de vie et de son identité.
