Não seria errado afirmar que toda a filosofia quineana da identidade está em antítese com o ponto de vista wittgensteiniano. A atitude de Wittgenstein é entendida por Quine como um lamentável equívoco. Para Quine, podemos justificar o uso da identidade no nosso discurso mostrando como as únicas afirmações de identidade, que podem ser verdadeiras sem serem estéreis, são, nas próprias palavras de Quine em O Palavra e a Coisa, aquelas que contêm termos singulares diferentes, mas que se referem à mesma coisa. Para Quine, a identidade, expressa pelo sinal =, é um termo relacional que liga ocorrências distintas de termos singulares para formar uma afirmação. A afirmação de identidade obtida é considerada verdadeira se e somente se os seus componentes se referirem ao mesmo objeto. A identidade está intimamente ligada aqui à divisão da referência, ou seja, à aquisição de termos gerais. Ela só pode funcionar depois que esses termos que dividem as suas referências foram adquiridos. A distinção entre termos singulares e gerais é decisiva na semântica behaviorista e na epistemologia naturalista de Quine.
