O solo é uma parte vital do ambiente natural. É tão importante quanto as plantas, os animais, as rochas, as formas do relevo, os lagos e os rios. Influencia a distribuição das espécies vegetais e proporciona um habitat para uma grande variedade de organismos. Controla o fluxo de água e de substâncias químicas entre a atmosfera e a terra e atua como fonte e reservatório de gases (como oxigénio e dióxido de carbono) na atmosfera. Os solos não só refletem os processos naturais, mas também registam as atividades humanas, tanto no presente como no passado. São, portanto, parte do nosso património cultural. A modificação dos solos para a agricultura e o enterramento de vestígios arqueológicos são bons exemplos disso. O solo, juntamente com a vida vegetal e animal que sustenta, a rocha sobre a qual se desenvolve, a sua posição na paisagem e o clima a que está sujeito, formam um sistema natural incrivelmente complexo - mais poderoso e complexo do que qualquer máquina criada pelo homem. O solo pode parecer imóvel e sem vida, mas esta impressão não poderia estar mais longe da verdade. Está em constante mudança e desenvolvimento ao longo do tempo. O solo está sempre a responder às alterações dos fatores ambientais, juntamente com as influências do homem e da terra.
