O profissional de saúde é um cuidador na medida em que se propõe a lidar com pessoas que padecem de doenças físicas ou mentais. Mas as expectativas sobre ele depositadas por pacientes e seus familiares excede, muitas vezes, a possibilidade de satisfazê-las, dadas as limitações de recursos e de conhecimento frente à doença e à morte. Não obstante o prazer de ajudar, de cuidar, inevitavelmente o profissional se vê diante de um estresse constante, cuja consequência é, muitas vezes, adoecer, chegar ao esgotamento laboral que caracteriza a síndrome de burnout. Como forma de evitá-la, o autor propõe que os profissionais estendam o cuidar dos pacientes ao cuidado com os próprios colegas da equipe de trabalho, cultivando entre eles relações acolhedoras e empáticas e se apoiando mutuamente, numa constante troca de papéis, ora sendo cuidadores, ora sendo cuidados. Ao trabalhar numa equipe que funcione como cuidadora de si mesma, os profissionais automaticamente agem preventivamente, evitando a síndrome de burnout. Embora pareça difícil, a experiência de cuidar – ser cuidado existe potencialmente em todos nós, porque fomos bebês e precisamos de alguém que cuidasse de nós. Basta reativá-la. A proposta aqui apresentada se baseia em conceitos teóricos, mas, sobretudo, em experiência vivenciada numa equipe de saúde. O autor convida-o/a a compartilhar dessa experiência. 10
