Dit onderzoek gaat in op de werking van quantumcomputers. Quantummechanica wordt geïntroduceerd waarbij de eigenschappen die quantumcomputers zo bijzonder maken worden uitgelegd. Ook wordt uitgelegd wat qubits, de bouwstenen van quantumcomputers, zijn. Het onderzoek behandelt verschillende soorten qubits waaronder supergeleidende, topologische, ionenval, fotonische en spin qubits. De verschillende soorten qubits worden ook met elkaar vergeleken. Vervolgens wordt de opbouw van een quantumcomputer besproken. Daarbij wordt specifiek uitgelegd hoe quantumcomputers tot zeer lage temperaturen worden gekoeld. Naast de natuurkundige aspecten van quantumcomputers, wordt ook de wiskundige kant behandeld. Daarbij wordt uitgelegd hoe bewerkingen worden uitgevoerd op qubits met behulp van quantumpoorten. Ook bespreken we bekende algoritmen die quantumcomputers kunnen gebruiken om klassieke computers te verslaan.
