Mais certaines pratiques de guerre impactent les ressources alimentaires à la fois des armées et des populations civiles (politique de la terre brûlée...). C’est cet affrontement que raconte l’auteur à travers les innombrables batailles qui ont secoué notre planète depuis le siège de Troie immortalisé par Homère.Mais les guerres nous ont aussi apporté des progrès dans l’alimentation quotidienne. Les guerres de conquête ont rapporté en Europe la pomme de terre, le piment, la tomate, le manioc et le chocolat. Le blocus continental a fait entrer dans notre alimentation le sucre de betterave et la chicorée. Les invasions mongoles nous ont apporté la choucroute. La guerre de 14-18 a introduit le couscous par les troupes coloniales et a popularisé le vin et le camembert. La seconde guerre mondiale a contribué à introduire l’american way of life : le Coca-Cola, les céréales du petit-déjeuner, les barres chocolatées et le chewing-gum...
