In Cameroon, the prison population is estimated at around 30,000 inmates for a capacity of 9,000, i.e. an occupancy rate of 432%. Faced with this overcrowding, prison conditions are becoming inhumane and responsible for a deterioration in inmates’ quality of life. Indeed, people in detention face a brutal rupture with their support networks. This isolation disrupts family dynamics and generates stress and anxiety. To minimize suicide, stress and anxiety among detainees, we need to establish a climate of good relations and maintain family ties. Psychosocial support is therefore an essential variable in improving inmates’ quality of life.
