Psychische Krankheit wird in dieser Arbeit als Störung einer Beziehung zwischen Person und Welt aufgefasst, die wesentlich durch den Leib und den Raum vermittelt ist. Diese Beziehung lässt sich phänomenologisch adäquater beschreiben, wenn der Erlebnisraum in verschiedene Modalitäten differenziert wird: in den Leibraum, den Richtungs-, den Stimmungs-, den personalen und den Lebensraum. Diese Anthropologie von Leib und Raum dient als Basis zum einen für eine phänomenologische Interpretation der Melancholie und der Schizophrenie, zum anderen für eine empirische Untersuchung zweier Patientengruppen mit paranoiden und depressiven Alterspsychosen. Die Arbeit schlägt somit einen Bogen von der anthropologischen Grundlegung über die spezielle Psychopathologie zur empirischen Anwendung in der biographisch-psychopathologischen Forschung.
