Es eignet sich daher als Grundlage oder Begleitbuch einer einführenden Psychologievorlesung (im Rahmen eines Universitätsstudiums). Auch dem allgemein an Psychologie interessierten Leser ist dieses Buch zu empfehlen. Um das Verständnis der dargestellten Forschungsergebnisse zu vertiefen, werden einige ausgewählte Experimente genauer beschrieben und verschiedene (zum Teil gegensätzliche) theoretische Standpunkte erörtert. Neuere Ansätze und der aktuelle Forschungsstand werden besonders berücksichtigt - in höherem Maß, als das vielfach bei elementaren Einführungen üblich ist. Aber auch bewährte ältere - teilweise zu Unrecht vergessene oder übergangene - Ansätze werden ausführlich dargestellt. Das Buch bemüht sich um eine ausgewogene Darstellung (nach Möglichkeit ohne Überbetonung oder Vernachlässigung einzelner Teilgebiete) sowie um eine Synthese der Beiträge aus verschiedenen psychologischen Teilgebieten und Richtungen.
