La relation mère-fille face à la maladie oncologique est abordée sous l’angle de la psychanalyse. Freud théorise que le psychique peut influencer les processus physiques, c’est l’âme qui affecte le physique. Dans le discours des mères, des impasses émergent par rapport à la place qu’occupait l’enfant dans leurs fantasmes, avant et après la maladie, le déni de la maladie de leur fille et la difficulté à faire le deuil de l’image idéalisée de l’enfant construite par le fantasme maternel. L’enfant semble évoquer pour la mère son enfance perdue et le corps de l’enfant peut être un moyen d’exprimer le malaise familial. Lorsque les mères apprennent le diagnostic d’une maladie chronique et mortelle, elles se réfugient parfois dans le déni de la maladie de leur enfant, construisant un tampon entre leur fantasme (enfant idéalisé) et la réalité (enfant malade). Il faut faire le deuil de l’enfant idéalisé pour que la mère ne soit pas paralysée dans sa blessure narcissique et commence à aider sa fille à construire son propre narcissisme, son image corporelle et à voir autre chose qu’un enfant malade. Il est nécessaire de repérer le discours de la personne malade, ainsi que les fantasmes de l’enfant et de la mère sur le fait d’être malade.
