O escritor tentou, inutilmente, enfrentar o desamparo e as humilhações de que foi vítima, decorrentes da sua cor e classe social, pela via da escrita literária. Mas acabou por sucumbir ao dramático da própria existência, deixando-se tragar pelo gozo mortífero, pela compulsão ao uso abusivo do álcool, enfim, pela pulsão de morte. Tal como Policarpo Quaresma,  um de seus personagens mais conhecidos, triste também foi o fim de Lima Barreto. 10
