Zrozumienie funkcji każdej z warstw modelu referencyjnego OSI jest bardzo ważne przy rozwiązywaniu problemów związanych z połączeniami między komponentami sieciowymi. Po zrozumieniu tych funkcji i narzędzi do rozwiązywania problemów dostępnych na różnych warstwach modelu, rozwiązywanie problemów będzie znacznie łatwiejsze. Model Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) jest narzędziem referencyjnym służącym do zrozumienia komunikacji danych między dowolnymi dwoma systemami sieciowymi. Dzieli on procesy komunikacyjne na siedem warstw. Każda warstwa pełni określone funkcje wspierające warstwy powyżej niej i oferuje usługi warstwom poniżej niej. Trzy najniższe warstwy koncentrują się na przekazywaniu ruchu przez sieć do systemu końcowego. Cztery najwyższe warstwy wchodzą w grę w systemie końcowym, aby zakończyć proces. Innymi słowy, warstwy 1-4 zajmują się przepływem danych od początku do końca przez sieć, a warstwy 5-7 zajmują się usługami dla aplikacji.
