Książka ta odzwierciedla epokę Kaddafiego i epokę po Kaddafim, w szczególności kryzys libijski, który odnosi się do trwających konfliktów w Libii, począwszy od protestów Arabskiej Wiosny w 2011 roku, które doprowadziły do wojny domowej, zagranicznej interwencji wojskowej oraz obalenia i śmierci Muammera Kaddafiego. Następstwa wojny domowej i rozprzestrzenianie się grup zbrojnych doprowadziły do przemocy i niestabilności w całym kraju, które w 2014 r. doprowadziły do ponownego wybuchu wojny domowej. Trwający w Libii kryzys spowodował do tej pory dziesiątki tysięcy ofiar od początku przemocy na początku 2011 roku. Podczas obu wojen domowych produkcja kluczowego dla gospodarki Libii przemysłu naftowego spadła do niewielkiego ułamka zwykłego poziomu, a większość obiektów została zablokowana lub uszkodzona przez rywalizujące grupy, mimo że Libia posiada największe rezerwy ropy naftowej w jakimkolwiek kraju afrykańskim.
