Indyjskie społeczeństwo wiejskie doświadczyło zmian, jeśli chodzi o status kobiet. Dzisiejsze kobiety nie są zamknięte w czterech ścianach kuchni. Sprawują większą kontrolę nad zasobami. Podejmują ważne decyzje dotyczące żywności, konsumpcji w gospodarstwie domowym, edukacji dzieci, małżeństw córek i synów itp. Mimo to poziom upodmiotowienia nie jest jednolity we wszystkich społeczeństwach. Brak wykształcenia stanowi istotną barierę dla ich upodmiotowienia.
