Badanie to zostało przeprowadzone w celu określenia wpływu zakażenia wirusem Epsteina-Barra (EBV) na naturalny przebieg zakażenia wirusem ludzkiego niedoboru odporności (HIV) u dzieci. Określono wzorce przeciwciał surowiczych przeciwko EBV oraz stan kliniczny i laboratoryjny 64 dzieci zakażonych wirusem HIV w 1997 r., które były obserwowane w szpitalu w Ribeirão Preto w stanie São Paulo. Badanie wykazało wysoką częstość występowania przeciwciał przeciwko EBV oraz większą częstotliwość występowania śródmiąższowego zapalenia płuc u dzieci narażonych na EBV.
