Born in 1923 into the ancient French noble family of La Rochefoucauld, Robert de La Rochefoucauld’s privileged upbringing in Paris and elite education in Switzerland and Austria were shattered by the Nazi invasion of France in 1940. At 16, inspired by Charles de Gaulle’s call to resist, he joined the French Resistance, fleeing to London in 1942 after being denounced to the Gestapo. Recruited by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), Robert underwent rigorous training in sabotage, combat, and espionage, transforming from an aristocrat into a daring operative. In 1943, he parachuted into occupied France, sabotaging key infrastructure like electrical substations and railroads, only to be captured by the Gestapo. He escaped execution through a bold leap from a moving truck and a stolen Nazi limousine. In 1944, he executed a spectacular mission, destroying a massive munitions factory near Bordeaux by smuggling explosives in hollowed-out bread loaves. Captured again at Fort du Hâ, he faked an epileptic seizure, killed a guard, and escaped disguised as a nun. Throughout the Normandy campaign, he led sabotage and espionage missions, collaborating with local Resistance networks, and survived another capture and near-execution, thanks to a Resistance rescue. In 1945, Robert spearheaded raids on German strongholds, sustaining a severe knee injury from a mine explosion. After the war, he served in the French military during the First Indochina War and Suez Crisis, transitioning from clandestine to conventional warfare. From 1966 to 1996, he served as mayor of Ouzouer-sur-Trézée, revitalizing the community while reflecting on his wartime experiences. In 1997, his controversial testimony defending Maurice Papon, a Vichy official, sparked debate, but his 2002 memoir, La Liberté, C’est Mon Plaisir, cemented his legacy. Honored with the Légion d’Honneur, Croix de Guerre, and British Distinguished Service Order, Robert died in 2012 at 88, leaving a legacy of courage and resistance that continues to inspire.
