Una rete mobile ad hoc (MANET) è una rete fluida e spontanea di dispositivi wireless che ha il potenziale per stabilirsi rapidamente, senza fare affidamento su un’infrastruttura centrale preesistente . I nodi di una MANET operano in modo decentralizzato e questo pone sfide uniche in termini di protocolli di routing e gestione delle risorse. Per superare queste sfide sono stati creati diversi protocolli di instradamento , che però devono trovare un equilibrio tra diversi aspetti, come ridurre al minimo l’uso delle risorse ed evitare l’instradamento di dati non necessari . Questi protocolli devono anche essere progettati per identificare rapidamente i nuovi dispositivi connessi , in modo da poterli utilizzare per l’instradamento. Anche se la progettazione di protocolli di routing per le MANET è impegnativa, è necessaria affinché queste reti funzionino in modo efficace. Pertanto, i protocolli di routing utilizzati nelle MANET devono essere dinamici e adattivi per gestire la topologia mutevole. I nodi difettosi nella rete causano interruzioni nella comunicazione. Per garantire che la comunicazione continui, è necessario un routing con tolleranza ai guasti nelle MANET.
