Le dominicain M.-É. Boismard (1916-2004), professeur du Nouveau Testament durant plus de quarante-cinq ans à l’École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem (ÉBAF), traducteur participant de la prestigieuse Bible de Jérusalem et co-auteur de la Synopse des quatre évangiles, était convaincu que la version originale des évangiles était plus courte que la forme canonique disponible de nos jours et, grâce à d’anciennes versions des évangiles, d’anciens écrits des Pères de l’Église et aidé de la méthode historico-critique en exégèse, il parvint à restituer les récits des proto-évangiles. Cet ouvrage est donc une compilation des récits des proto-évangiles restitués par feu l’exégète français M.-É. Boismard O.P. ; et les noms propres ont été translittérés à partir des formes les plus anciennes explicitées par l’étymologie (compilation et translittération des noms par Sébastien Côté).
