Questo libro presenta uno studio teorico delle proprietà ottiche ed eccitoniche di un eccitone confinato in quantum dot (QD) di forma discoidale, tenendo conto degli effetti del confinamento quantistico, della pressione idrostatica e della temperatura. L’analisi si basa sul metodo variazionale, sulla teoria della massa effettiva e sulla funzione di inviluppo. Dopo un’introduzione ai concetti fondamentali dei semiconduttori e delle nanostrutture, il libro esamina l’impatto del confinamento sui livelli di energia e sulle proprietà ottiche. Lo studio delle proprietà eccitoniche, lineari e non lineari, rivela che una riduzione delle dimensioni dei BQ rafforza il confinamento, aumenta l’energia di legame dell’eccitone e provoca uno spostamento verso il blu degli spettri di assorbimento. Viene analizzato anche l’effetto combinato della pressione e della temperatura: la pressione accentua l’interazione elettrone-lacuna, mentre la temperatura e l’ingrandimento dei BQ inducono uno spostamento verso il rosso. Due semplici relazioni analitiche consentono di descrivere l’evoluzione dell’energia di legame in funzione di questi parametri.
