Este livro apresenta uma visão geral dos estudos sobre as propriedades físicas, químicas e luminescentes de fósforos de óxido do grupo IV A puros e dopados com terras raras. Os óxidos considerados no presente trabalho são SiO2 e SnO2. O SiO2 é conhecido há muito tempo como um hospedeiro conveniente para terras raras e tem sido amplamente utilizado na fabricação de lasers de estado sólido, enquanto o SnO2 é um semicondutor do tipo n com banda proibida larga de 2,5-3eV, que cristaliza na estrutura rutilo (estrutura tetragonal). O SnO2 é membro de uma classe especial de semicondutores que têm intervalos de banda diretos, mas são proibidos por dipolo devido à sua simetria especial da função de onda. No presente trabalho, os fósforos de óxido do grupo IV A (SiO2 e SnO2) foram preparados pelo método sol-gel, mas a forma pura dos nanofósforos do grupo IV A tem uma intensidade de luminescência fraca. A intensidade aumenta muitas vezes ao dopá-los com elementos de terras raras, portanto, o doping foi realizado com a ajuda de elementos de terras raras (Ce3+, Eu3+ e Dy3+). Eles são incorporados simultaneamente em matrizes de sílica e estanho por processos sol-gel e são ainda caracterizados por técnicas de caracterização geral e de luminescência.
