Moderne Prozessoren verfügen über mehrere Prozessorkerne und über einen 64-Bit-Modus. Obwohl mehrere Prozessorkerne zur Verfügung stehen, nutzt normale Standardsoftware nur einen Prozessorkern aus. Außerdem handelt es sich bei der meisten Software um eine 32-Bit-Software. Die Multicore- Architektur bringt den Vorteil mit sich, dass Berechnungen schneller durchgeführt werden können, da Berechnungen parallel auf mehreren Prozessorkernen durchgeführt werden können. Der primäre Vorteil der 64-Bit-Architektur ist, dass es möglich wird, einen Adressraum, welcher größer als 4GB ist, zu adressieren. Das Ziel meiner Diplomarbeit war es ein Umstellungskonzept für die Messsoftware von Carl Zeiss IMT, welche den Namen 'Calypso - Visual Metrology' hat, zu erstellen. Das in der Diplomarbeit erarbeitete Umstellungskonzept möchte ich mit diesem Buch vorstellen. Das Umstellungskonzept bezieht sich auf die Programmiersprachen Smalltalk, C/C++ und C#.
