La ricerca si basa su una metodologia qualitativa e valutativa, che è consistita nella raccolta e nell’analisi dei programmi forniti dalle istituzioni penitenziarie e post-carcerarie per le donne in Iberoamerica, con particolare attenzione alla Colombia. A tal fine sono stati utilizzati criteri di inclusione quali: che i programmi fossero incentrati sulla popolazione femminile e che fossero offerti in Iberoamerica. È risultato evidente che i programmi trovati in Iberoamerica rappresentano un trattamento carente per le donne, che offrono principalmente programmi che riproducono stereotipi di genere, che le esigenze specifiche della popolazione sono sconosciute e che la creazione di programmi post-carcerari è legata alle lacune dei sistemi carcerari. Pertanto, sono stati stabiliti i seguenti criteri: tenere conto delle regole di Bangkok e di Mandela; costruire programmi di inserimento socio-occupazionale che non abbiano pregiudizi di genere; includere la componente psicosociale nel trattamento post-carcerario; educare ai valori morali e sociali; fornire un adeguato follow-up alle donne post-carcerate.
