Professor Bernhardi ist ein Drama Arthur Schnitzlers, das am 28. November 1912 im Kleinen Theater, Berlin, mit Bruno Decarli als Bernhardi und Alfred Abel als Kaplan erfolgreich uraufgeführt wurde. Wegen des systemkritischen Inhalts waren Aufführungen in der Donaumonarchie bis zu deren Zerfall, 1918, verboten. In ausführlichen Dialogen adressiert es den Antisemitismus, Probleme der Ethik und der Jurisprudenz sowie des Katholizismus. Letztendlich geht es aber primär und ewiggültig um das Navigieren zwischen Ethik und dem Machbaren, die eigentlichen Spannungspunkte Juden und Christklerikale sind definitiv nur seinerzeit zeitgenössisch verständliche Instrumente des Autors, um die eigentlichen Handlungsziele zu kolorieren: Soll man individuell richtig und ethisch handeln - wie Bernhardi - oder soll man kollektive, große Ziele verfolgen. Schnitzler gibt seine Antwort so, dass Kollektivziele unter Missachtung persönlicher Ethik abzulehnen sind. Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) war ein österreichischer Erzähler und Dramatiker. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Wiener Moderne. Schnitzler schrieb Dramen und Prosa, in denen er das Augenmerk vor allem auf die psychischen Vorgänge seiner Figuren lenkt.Gleichzeitig mit dem Einblick in das Innenleben der Schnitzlerschen Figuren bekommt der Leser auch ein Bild von der Gesellschaft, die diese Gestalten und ihr Seelenleben prägt. Die Handlung der Werke Schnitzlers spielt meist im Wien der Jahrhundertwende.
