Il Servizio geologico dell’India (GSI), l’organizzazione pionieristica di scienze della terra in India, è impegnato nella mappatura geologica, nella ricerca e nell’esplorazione di risorse minerarie/energetiche e offshore; nella realizzazione di studi di geologia ingegneristica, geotecnica, ambientale e di rischio geologico, oltre ad altri programmi geoscientifici - marini, glaciali e antartici. Il GSI ha sempre raggiunto uno dei suoi obiettivi principali: rendere disponibili mappe geologiche e pubblicazioni che proiettano le informazioni relative alle scienze della terra. Con oltre 165 anni di servizio e avendo mappato il Paese, il GSI ha raggiunto un magazzino di dati sulla geoinformazione e ha diffuso un gran numero di mappe geologiche e tematiche su varie scale. Mentre costruisce e gestisce un vasto volume di geoinformazioni, compresa l’enorme ricchezza di dati cartografici, il GSI sta entrando in una nuova fase: l’integrazione dei dati attraverso il suo prestigioso e informatissimo Online Core Business Integrated System (https://www.gsi.gov.in). Gli sforzi del GSI, come processo continuo, costituiranno la base e apriranno ulteriormente la strada all’intera comunità geoscientifica nella georicerca, nella ricerca di minerali e in tutti gli sviluppi socio-economici.
