O mito nos influencia involuntariamente: é exatamente pelo fato de nos influenciarmos por algo que não desejamos, que torna uma história, um fato ou uma personagem um mito. A importância do mito está no fato vital que ele simboliza. A princípio, este fato deve ser obscuro caso contrário ele não seria mito: é o segredo e o anonimato o que lhe conferem significado na rede intricada das relações que se estabelecem dentro de um determinado grupo social. Não há mito enquanto for lícito manter-se dentro das evidências e exprimi-las duma maneira manifesta e direta. Para nós, o mito inexiste nas verdades científicas, todavia, quando ele exprime um fato obscuro como é o caso de uma paixão ligada à morte com fins destrutivos para aqueles que a ele se abandonam com todas as suas forças, aí sim, para nós, o mito tem muito sentido. É que nós queremos salvar esta paixão e queremos bem a essa infelicidade, enquanto as nossas morais oficiais e a nossa razão a condenam. Assim, vive-se, pela imaginação, a obscuridade do mito da paixão, sem, contudo, ter ciência clara dele.
