Um grupo de trabalho numa cidade da Renânia do Norte-Vestefália estabeleceu uma cooperação com uma universidade para investigar a eficácia do seu próprio aconselhamento. Um estudo baseado em entrevistas forneceu informações sobre os processos de aconselhamento considerados eficazes do ponto de vista dos clientes. Com base nisso, deveria ser desenvolvido um instrumento de feedback. Os bons resultados do estudo levaram o grupo de trabalho a apresentá-lo a um público mais amplo em um simpósio especializado. Esse simpósio não planejado resultou, posteriormente, em outro estudo sobre a recepção dos resultados pelo público. Na reunião final de cooperação para o acompanhamento do simpósio, não houve acordos adicionais sobre uma ação conjunta futura (desenvolvimento de um instrumento de feedback). A mudança na composição do grupo de trabalho levou, segundo se supôs, a mudanças tanto na colaboração dentro do grupo de trabalho como na cooperação com as investigadoras. O fim indireto da cooperação deu origem à análise do processo de investigação sob os aspetos da dinâmica de grupo.
