W rzeczywistości kwestia czasu wydaje się niezwykle prosta i znana wszystkim, choć jest to dalekie od prawdy. Augustyn dostrzega to, stwierdzając w swoich Wyznaniach: „Czy jest temat bardziej znany i częściej poruszany w naszych rozmowach niż czas? Kiedy o nim mówimy, rozumiemy, co mówimy. Rozumiemy również, co mówią nam inni, gdy o nim mówią'. Jednak sam przyznaje również, że ta łatwość jest tylko pozorna i stwierdza: „Jeśli nikt mnie nie pyta, wiem; ale jeśli chcę wyjaśnić temu, kto mnie zapytał, już nie wiem'.
