Die chronische Parodontitis ist eine komplexe entzündliche Erkrankung, die sowohl von mikrobiellen als auch von wirtsbezogenen Faktoren beeinflusst wird. Zu den wichtigsten vom Wirt stammenden Faktoren gehören pro-inflammatorische Marker wie Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Tumornekrosefaktor-alpha (TNF-α), Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) und Makrophagen-Entzündungsprotein (MIP-1α). Diese Biomarker spielen eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Vermittlung der Entzündungsreaktion auf parodontale Krankheitserreger, die zur Zerstörung von Bindegewebe und Alveolarknochen führt. Erhöhte Werte dieser Marker in der Gingivakrebsflüssigkeit, im Speichel oder im Serum wurden durchweg mit einem erhöhten Schweregrad und Fortschreiten der Erkrankung in Verbindung gebracht.
