Set in the Caribbean during the Seven Years War, the story follows the return of Lieutenant Robert Marshal from the war in the north. Suffering from his experience, Robert has withdrawn from friends, family and the sea. Redemption comes through the efforts his former crew and he goes to sea again, though this time as a privateer for profit, rather than patriotism. Sailing the Caribbean from the Leeward to the Windward Islands, Robert and his crew battle the French, storms at sea and disease to gain the prize money as their due. Told from three perspectives, the British, the French and the free-Black population of the British colonies; the story follows Robert, a French privateer and one of the last free-Black families of obeah on Antigua. When a British fleet unexpectedly comes to the Leeward Islands to oppose the French, Robert and his ship are forced to assist in the invasion of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Baptiste Guyot Du Clos, a former French naval officer also turned privateer, is part of the defense of the islands. As the armies face each other on the islands, the fleets move between them, seeking the weather gauge and advantage. Ultimately, alone and outnumbered, Robert and his crew face Baptiste and other French privateers in the final fight for the French islands.
