Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) was an Englishdemographer and political economist best known forhis pessimistic but highly influential views on populationgrowth. For most of his life he was professor ofmodern history and political economy at the East IndiaCompany College, Hailey bury. There Malthus developeda theory of demand supply mismatches which hecalled gluts. Considered ridiculous at the time, his theorywas a precursor to later theories about the GreatDepression, and to the works of admirer and economistJohn Maynard Keynes. Malthus is widely regarded asthe founder of modern demography.
