Huisartsen worden vaak gezocht door patiënten die gezond zijn en potentiële toekomstige ziekten willen voorkomen, maar geen identificeerbare biologische ziekte hebben. Het ondergaan van laboratorium- en diagnostische tests met een preventieve intentie is frequent geworden en wordt vaak aangestuurd door gezondheidsautoriteiten. Momenteel hebben we echter aanwijzingen voor een aanzienlijk risico op schade wanneer gezonde personen preventieve gezondheidsdiensten ondergaan. Het vinden van een incidentaloma, het krijgen van een vals positief of overdosis worden enkele van de mogelijke schade in verband met preventieve gezondheidszorg. Het doel van het huidige onderzoek was om te beoordelen welke gezondheidsdiensten noodzakelijk worden geacht, en met welke frequentie, door volwassenen uit de algemene Portugese bevolking; om te beoordelen of huisartsen preventieve gezondheidsdiensten verrichten in overeenstemming met de wetenschappelijke gegevens; en om de effecten van het modificeren van het elektronische bestellingscommunicatiesysteem via een gerandomiseerde gecontroleerde studie te vergelijken.
