Unia Afrykańska jest organizacją zajmującą się promowaniem pokoju, bezpieczeństwa i rozwoju w Afryce, z demokracją, wyborami i zarządzaniem w centrum jej agendy. Organizacja przyjęła szereg instrumentów prawnych mających na celu wzmocnienie demokracji i rządów w Afryce. Jednak niekonstytucyjne zmiany rządów stały się głównym wyzwaniem dla demokracji w Afryce. Niezależnie od istnienia wszystkich tych norm, zamachy stanu, manipulacje wyborcze i ograniczenia wolności słowa są przeszkodami prowadzącymi do kryzysów politycznych, które z kolei prowadzą do niestabilności w regionie. UA musi zatem promować kulturę demokracji i praworządności w Afryce, aby wzmocnić niezależne instytucje demokratyczne. Ponieważ wyzwania związane z demokracją w Afryce są złożone i wieloaspektowe, konieczne jest holistyczne podejście, które umożliwi UA odgrywanie ważnej roli w promowaniu bardziej demokratycznej, stabilnej i dostatniej Afryki, czego nigdy wcześniej nie robiono.
