De la puerta en medio de la nada, emerge la luz del páramo sobre el rostro de un joven que se deja caer sobre el marco. Eric alza su faz hacia la lejanía: los ojos, dos diamantes fragmentados por el largo filo de sus tormentos, la boca jadeante y las manos temblorosas. Escondido bajo el reflejo del páramo de sus pupilas, subyace latente una sombra escurridiza, elástica, que se remueve cual anticipo de la odisea que en su futuro se describe. Ante él, el horizonte desolado enrojece y tuerce el atardecer. Ensimismado, Eric pule un pensamiento de duda sin entender lo que realmente se muestra ante él. Se agacha y roza con los dedos el suelo, lo siente, observa la lejanía infinita y murmura: «Tiene que ser un sueño —niega con el rostro—. No puede ser que esté muerto».
