Praca dzieci jest w naszym społeczeństwie przedstawiana głównie jako wielki skandal i toczy się nieustanna debata, czy można kupować produkty wytworzone przez dzieci, czy też jest to moralnie naganne. W większości przypadków opinia jest jasna i dość oczywista, mianowicie, że praca jest ogólnie absolutnie szkodliwa dla dzieci i powinna być zakazana w każdej formie. W niniejszej książce sprawdzono, czy są to pochopne wnioski, czy też uzasadnione założenia. Krytycznie zestawiono różne punkty widzenia. Z jednej strony wskazano szkodliwe skutki pracy dzieci i związane z nią formy wyzysku, z drugiej strony poddano w wątpliwość osądy i rzekomą wiedzę na ten temat oraz spojrzano na pracę dzieci z perspektywy pracy samodzielnej i zorientowanej na potrzeby.
