Elles incarnaient une autorité à la fois politique, spirituelle et judiciaire, fondée sur des rites, des croyances et une légitimité ancestrale. Pourtant, ces institutions, jadis respectées et redoutées, connaissent aujourd’hui une transformation profonde, voire une altération de leur essence sous l’influence des dynamiques politiques modernes. Cet ouvrage s’inscrit dans une réflexion plus large sur l’évolution des pouvoirs traditionnels en Afrique, et plus particulièrement au Cameroun, où la chefferie n’est plus seulement une institution coutumière, mais un enjeu de pouvoir et d’influence pour les élites politiques locales. Il met en lumière un phénomène préoccupant : la profanation du sacré et du divin des chefferies traditionnelles au service d’ambitions politiciennes.
