Postgres surgió como continuación del proyecto gres para el desarrollo de un sistema de bases de datos, que ha continuado bajo la filosofía de desarrollo de software libre. Ha sido descrito como un sistema de bases de datos relacional orientado a objetos (ORDBMS por sus siglas en ingles) basado en POSTGRES 4.2. Desarrollado en el departamento de ciencias de la computación de la Universidad de Berkeley en California.
