Migration ist ein anthropologisches Phänomen, das der Menschheit seit jeher bekannt ist. Menschen ziehen von einem Land in ein anderes oder von einer Region in eine andere, meist auf der Suche nach besseren Lebensbedingungen. Dies ist mit Zerrissenheit und dem Bruch der Zugehörigkeitsbeziehungen zur bekannten Welt verbunden. Die bekannte Welt ist das Herkunftsland, seine Kultur, seine Sitten und Gebräuche, die Familie, die Freunde und ein ganzes soziales System, in dessen Rahmen sich die eigene Identität und die soziale Identität jedes Einzelnen herausbilden. In einer Migrationssituation werden die eigene Identität und die soziale Identität in Frage gestellt. Manche Migranten sind bereit, sich mithilfe einer therapeutischen Intervention neu zu positionieren. Die therapeutische Arbeit im systemischen Ansatz besteht darin, den Menschen und seine Systeme zu verstehen. Dabei wird der systemische Therapeut in dieser Beziehung sehr oft selbst mit seinen eigenen Zugehörigkeitsbeziehungen und Resonanzen konfrontiert.
