¿Puede hablarse en Chile de “populismo”? Esta obra sostiene que sí, al menos para el período que va de 1925 a 1958 (“de Ibáñez a Ibáñez”). Para demostrarlo, y a contrapelo de la noción de populismo como manipulación de masas pasivas, argumenta que este fenómeno fue el resultado de un pacto entre diversos sectores populares y un Estado que amplió sus funciones hacia el ámbito de lo económico y lo social. Esto se tradujo en un régimen político más incluyente y sensible hacia las necesidades y derechos sociales, anclado en una idea de “comunidad nacional” que incorporaba explícitamente al mundo popular. Este primer tomo aborda esta dinámica desde el ángulo de la relación entre los trabajadores y el Estado, abarcando los dos gobiernos de Carlos Ibáñez y los frentes populares encabezados por Pedro Aguirre Cerda y Juan Antonio Ríos. Se identifican así varios puntos de encuentro entre esta experiencia histórica y otros populismos emblemáticos de América Latina, tales como el peronismo en Argentina y el varguismo en Brasil. 10
